Most of the problems in the use of these cameras is from operator error. As long as you operate the Kiev 88CM THE WAY THE MANUAL INDICATES IT SHOULD BE OPERATED... It will likely never fail you. Failing to read the manual, failing to follow the proper sequence in tensioning the shutter and setting shutter speed, or being ham-fisted and putting your thumb through the shutter curtains while changing backs, finders, or film are the major reasons these cameras fail.
I've actually just ordered a new Arax 88CM from Arax in the Ukraine... Just because I want a new camera, and I LIKE the Kiev 88CMs.
The Kiev 88CM is a low-cost alternative to Hasselblad. No, it's NOT a Hassy; I've had a half-dozen Hassy bodies and a slew of Zeiss lenses over the years. But you'd be hard pressed to look at a negative from each camera and tell me which image came from which brand. The biggest thing I like about the Kievs is that the in-body focal plane shutter means that you don't have to have every lens and leaf shutter you own serviced every 18 months. AND Pentacon-6 mount lenses are the "universal donor" lens.
They can be adapted to just about any other camera made, both digital and film EXCEPT, of course... I recently found a full set of five Carl Zeiss Jena lenses that came with two Kiev Pentacon-6 mount bodies FOR the lenses and as a result, I now have Kiev cameras to sell. This is the first camera: a fully-functional 88CM camera with a Pentacon-6 lens mount. The Kiev 88CM is a removable-back 120 roll-film (6x6 square format) camera with a durable black cloth focal plane shutter.
It is considerably improved from it's earlier Kiev 88, Salyut, and other predecessors, and with an adapter, the Kiev 88CM can also accept the original Kiev 88 lenses from its predecessors, which is quite convenient. This body is in particularly nice cosmetic condition, and seems to function as designed. The shutter speeds sound appropriate. The mirror is in nice condition. I don't believe it has seen much use at all. The body has a standard Kiev split-image central spot focusing screen. The body comes with a cosmetically and optically VERY nice 45 prism. The TTL/Spot meter turns on, and the LEDs light, but it doesn't seem to respond to the meter control knob. It may be repairable, it may not... I have priced the camera accordingly with the inop meter in mind. BTW, this 45 prism finder can also be used on any Hasselblad 500 series camera...
Just in case you need one and have a Hassy lying about. This particular Kiev 88CM will accept all of the Arsenal Pentacon-6 mount lenses and most of the Carl Zeiss Jena P-6 mount lenses, but the CZJ Biometar 80mm f/2.8 will not properly operate on this body because of the location of the DOF preview lever on the Biometar and its proximity to the lens mount. As far as I know, any other Pentacon-6 mount lens will function nicely. I have not, however tried them all. But, as the body comes with the Arsat 80mm f/2.8, the Zeiss Biometar 80mm lens issue should be moot.
The camera comes with, of course, the Arsat-C 80mm f/2.8 lens; an incredible optic on its own. And this particular example has snappy, clean and dry aperture blades, a smooth focusing helix, and is in excellent cosmetic and optical condition without haze, fog, fungus, or any other issues. It includes the original Arsenal 62mm front cap. The NT (new-type) back comes with the dark slide and also appears to work as designed, and the multiple exposure switch works. I'm including with this camera, FIVE contrast-enhancing 62mm b&w filters in cases, the original owner's manual, the original Arsenal lens cap for the Arsat-C, and an original Kiev 88CM neck strap. One of the filter cases is an interesting, original Kiev 88, two-sided case sort of an interesting old piece. The photos are an integral part of the description of this outfit. Please study them carefully for the exact cosmetic condition of the camera body, optics, and accessories. I try to be as accurate as possible in my description and the photos illustrate the condition of the outfit. Please message me with questions and check my other auctions for Nikon, Pentax, Mamiya, Kiev, Hasselblad and Leica cameras, lenses, and accessories.
